Vanesa, 19 years old, lives with her little son, her mother, and her grandmother in a poor neighborhood in Lima, Peru. Since she gave birth to a son, people say she has "el susto (the fright)" a disease suffered by animals and humans due to deep fear.

Vanesa feels motherhood is a burden. She turns to her mother to look after her child since she prefers going out, having fun, taking care of her hair, or sleeping. Her mother insists on her finding a decent job. Still, Vanesa manages to travel to Buenos Aires.
